Math & Movement Mini-Academy

Program Type: Free annual summer academy for elementary students and teachers

Status: Active program

Cost: Free to attend

Target Participants:

  • Students: K-5th grade students (split by grade level)

  • - Day 1: Rising 1st-3rd graders
    - Day 2: Rising 4th-6th graders
  • Teachers: K-2 educators and 3rd-5th grade educators (professional development)
  • Program Philosophy: Students can learn valuable math skills while also getting physical exercise; combines physical activity with math instruction

    Focus Areas: Elementary mathematics education; engagement in math learning; physical activity integrated with academics

    Program Format: Two-day event

  • Day 1 Morning: K-2 teachers participate in professional development workshop on making math fun for young elementary students

  • Day 1 Afternoon: Teachers apply lessons learned while working with rising 1st-3rd grade students

  • Day 2 Morning: 3rd-5th grade teachers participate in professional development workshop

  • Day 2 Afternoon: Teachers interact with rising 4th-6th grade students
  • Key Activities:

  • Giant counting mats where students hop on numbered squares to solve math problems

  • Variety of math games and activities

  • Hands-on, engaging learning experiences

  • Physical movement integrated with math problem-solving
  • Program Goal: Help students gain excitement about math, increase retention, and develop basic math skills through interactive, physically engaging activities

    Location: ORAU's main campus in Oak Ridge, Tennessee
