Local Arts Grants

Award Range: $1,000 (Mini Grants) to $9,000+ (General Operating Support and Special Project Grants)

Purpose: Provides access to quality arts experiences in Morris County communities. Each year, the program supports more than 1,500 arts activities and programs that serve over 100,000 children and adults.

Geographic Scope: Morris County, New Jersey

Funding Source: Made possible by and contingent on funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA), a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts

Focus Areas:

• Visual arts
• Theatre
• Dance
• Instrumental and choral groups
• Museums
• Broad-based community arts programming

1. General Operating Support (GOS) Grants

• For arts organizations
• Support general operations and programming

2. Special Project Support (SPS) Grants

• For other types of organizations that have significant arts programs
• Support specific projects or initiatives

3. Mini Grants ($1,000)

• For new and emerging organizations
• Intended as introduction to Local Arts Grant Program
• One Mini Grant per funding period per organization
• Receipt in one year is no guarantee of subsequent funding

Eligibility

• Morris County-based organizations
• Must provide arts events that are:
  • Artistically excellent
  • Provide public benefit
  • Accessible to the public

Application Process

• Independent panel of experienced arts panelists reviews applications
• Panelists experienced with various artistic modalities and knowledgeable about nonprofit arts organizations
• Evaluation panel scores applications
• Funding panel determines award recommendations
• Morris Arts Board of Trustees makes final decisions
• Applicants must outline:
  • How funding will be used
  • How work impacts community needs
  • ADA compliance

Funding Timeline (FY25 example)

• Funding Period: January 1 – December 31
• 1st Payment (75% of award): February
• Final Reports Due: January 7 following funding year
• 2nd and Final Payment (25% of award): February (subject to NJSCA funding receipt)

How to Apply

Current Status: FY26 grant applications are now closed. Applications are expected to open in early summer 2026 for FY27 grants.

Review and Decision Process

1. Evaluation panel meets to review and score each application
2. Application scores sent to funding panel
3. Funding panel determines specific award recommendations
4. Recommendations reviewed by Morris Arts Board of Trustees
5. Board makes final decision on all funding requests
