Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan was established in 1984 to ensure residents in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Washtenaw, Livingston and St. Clair counties can thrive. We’ve distributed more than $1.4 billion through more than 85,000 grants to nonprofits in fields as diverse as arts, children and youth, economic stability, health and human services, and the environment. We convene partners to solve regional challenges and serve as a trusted philanthropic advisor for donors who want to do good. Jeptha Wade Schureman Scholarship Program The purpose of the Schureman Scholarship Program is to assist students who are residents of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Lenawee, Washtenaw, Livingston and St. Clair counties attend one of the 15 public universities in Michigan. Up to ten scholarships of $7,500 each will be awarded to students each year. The scholarship is not renewable, but Schureman Scholars may reapply for scholarship consideration. Notification of the Schureman Scholarship Program is sent to the Financial Aid Office at each of the 15 nonprofit, public universities in Michigan with a request to make the information available to their students.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Lenawee, Washtenaw, Livingston or St. Clair counties at the time of high school graduation, though preference will be given to candidates who were residents of these counties during the four years they attend high school. High school seniors and currently enrolled college students may apply for scholarship consideration.Applicants must demonstrate strong scholastic performance while in high school or college with an equivalent of a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).Applicants must demonstrate leadership and character through extracurricular activities, service in school and community, volunteer involvement and paid work experience.While still a minor, each candidate must be fatherless through either death or by permanent termination of parental rights. Termination of parental rights must be determined by an order of a court of competent jurisdiction, by release for purposes of adoption given by the father (not a guardian) to the Department of Human Services or licensed child placement agency, or before a probate or juvenile court, or by any other process recognized by law as governing the parent- child status at the time of termination, excepting termination by death or emancipation. The applicant cannot have an adoptive father at the time of application.Candidates must be pursuing, or plan to pursue, a degree in the fields of law, nursing, medicine or dentistry.Candidates must apply to or be admitted to one of the 15 nonprofit, public universities in Michigan as a full-time student. Full-time enrollment at one of these 15 educational institutions is required. The 15 Michigan nonprofit, public universities are: Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Michigan-Dearborn, University of Michigan-Flint, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University.Candidates must provide a written personal statement that describes his or her educational plans and career goals, and motivating factors and important experiences which have helped to shape your personal philosophy and future goals.Applicants must demonstrate financial need by the completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Financial Aid) online at www.fafsa.gov. A copy of the online FAFSA application must be submitted to the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan as part of the online application process to determine the financial need of the applicant.All awards will be made without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or sexual identification.

Ineligibility

Employees of the Foundation and the high schools listed, members of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, and their dependents, members of the selection committee and their dependents are ineligible for scholarship consideration.
