Overview

JEDI Award Overview

Purpose: Recognize SICB members at any career stage who have strengthened the integrative biology community by promoting justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in their fields.

Geographic Scope: International (SICB members)

Focus Areas:

  • JEDI research and broad dissemination of research findings

  • Participation in existing programs that has led to recruitment and retention of students

  • Implementing and/or directing JEDI programs for institutions, organizations, and committees

  • Engaging with and providing enrichment opportunities for communities without access to STEM resources
  • Eligibility:

  • Individual SICB members or groups of members

  • Members at any career stage

  • Current SICB membership required for nominees (at least one member if a group is nominated)

  • NOT eligible: Contemporary officers, editors, or Broadening Participation Committee members
  • Award Details:

  • Amount: $1,000 honorarium (shared among recipients if a group)

  • Recognition: Recipients recognized in SICB newsletter

  • Funding Source: Gans Collections and Charitable Fund

    Application Process

    Nominations:
    1. Send email to Rita Mehta (rmehta2@ucsc.edu) with subject line "BP JEDI Award Nomination"
    2. Include nominee name(s) and email address(es)
    3. Each nominator may nominate up to three individuals or groups
    4. Nominator need not be the person writing the letter of support

    Application Submission:
    Completed applications should be submitted by the deadline specified in call for nominations. Send all materials in a single PDF to Rita Mehta (rmehta2@ucsc.edu) with subject line "Your Name_JEDI Application"

    Required Application Materials:

    1. External Letter of Support
    - Single letter, maximum 2 pages
    - Include biographical information (name, title, organization) of nominee(s)
    - Describe activities supporting JEDI award spirit
    - Describe nature and impact of nominee's work on justice, equity, diversity and inclusion
    - Written by someone familiar with nominee's activities
    - May be emailed separately or included in application package
    - Nominee's responsibility to request letter writer

    2. Biosketch
    - CV for individual (maximum 3 pages)
    - If group: CVs for each person in group

    3. Narrative Statement (written by nominee(s))
    - One page (up to 3 pages if group nomination)
    - History of activity(ies) or commitment
    - Description of activity(ies): target audience, goals, location, resources contributed
    - How often and length of time activity takes place
    - Effectiveness measurement/outcomes
    - For groups: information on how each person is involved and their contributions

    4. Optional Supplementary Material
    - Any materials clarifying activities relevant to award
    - Maximum 3 pages

    Submission Format: Single PDF document preferred
