Overview

Maine Community Foundation Founded in 1983, the Maine Community Foundation brings people and resources together to build a better Maine through strategic giving, community leadership, personalized service, local expertise and strong investments. The Maine Community Foundation established its first scholarship fund in 1984. Now, through the generosity of individuals, community organizations, and businesses that believe in the importance of education, the community foundation awards more than $3 million each year from nearly 700 scholarship funds. MaineCF scholarships provide financial assistance for Maine residents attending accredited colleges, universities, technical and career schools. The funds also support students attending private high schools, camps, and experiential learning programs. Higgins Scholarship Fund The Higgins Scholarship Fund was established under the terms of the last will and testament of Harlan B. Higgins in memory of his son, Kenneth Jordan Higgins. It supports the post-secondary education of needy or deserving graduating seniors residing in Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, and Scarborough, Maine. Awards will be determined based on an applicant’s financial need and likelihood of success at school, as evidenced by transcripts, letters of recommendation, and student essay. Students who make it through the initial screening process by the committee will be invited to an interview on a date to be determined. Applicants will be notified of their appointment time after the deadline. This scholarship was administered for many years by the United Way of Greater Portland and was voluntarily transferred to the Maine Community Foundation in 2017.
