Henry A. Jordan, M.D., Preservation Excellence Fund - Mid-Atlantic States The National Trust for Historic Preservation's Henry A. Jordan, M.D., Preservation Excellence Fund provides funding to deserving organizations demonstrating commitment to the protection of natural and cultural resources in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Jordan Preservation Excellence Fund was established in November 1996 in recognition of Dr. Jordan’s distinguished service to the National Trust and his visionary leadership of the national preservation movement. Applicants can apply for up to $5,000. The fund awards programs and activities that: Facilitate positive dialogues between the diverse interests of historic preservation, land conservation, business development, transportation, and government in a search for common ground in protecting the environmentStimulate the development of local and state policies that protect the cultural landscape and its resourcesHeighten public awareness of or increase involvement in issues relating to the livability and sustainability of communitiesEncourage innovative partnerships and approaches to open space conservation and historic preservationEligibility

The endowed fund supports innovative projects and programs in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.Eligible Activities:National Trust Preservation Fund grants are awarded for planning activities and education efforts focused on preservation.Planning: Support for obtaining professional expertise in areas such as architecture, archaeology, engineering, preservation planning, land-use planning, and law. Eligible planning activities include, but are not limited to:Hiring a preservation architect or landscape architect to produce a historic structure report or historic landscape master plan Hiring a preservation planner to produce design guidelines for a historic district Hiring a real estate development consultant to produce an economic feasibility study for the reuse of a threatened structure Sponsoring a community forum to develop a shared vision for the future of a historic neighborhoodEducation and Outreach: Support for preservation education activities aimed at the public. Funding will be provided to projects that:Employ innovative techniques and formats aimed at introducing new audiences to the preservation movement Feature educational programs or conference sessions.Applicants must be capable of matching the grant amount dollar-for-dollar. A cash match is required and can come from private or public sources, or from income earned from registration fees or fundraising activities. Matching funds must be used to fund eligible expenses listed below.Other conditions include:Grants or matching funds cannot be used directly or indirectly to influence a member of Congress to favor or oppose any legislation or appropriation. Any documents or plans for preservation work that result from the project must conform to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. At least three (3) competitive bids/quotes must be obtained for any procurement of services that exceed $50,000. This provision applies only to portions of the project supported by NTPF grant funds. Consultants must be approved by the National Trust before grant funds are disbursed. Board members of the applicant organization cannot serve as consultants unless appropriate conflict of interest procedures are followed and documented. Grant recipients are required to sign a contract agreeing to the conditions of the program. Grant projects must begin within six months of award date. Failure to begin the project in this time frame may result in the cancellation of the grant and you will need to reapply for funding. Grant recipients must include appropriate acknowledgement of National Trust financial support in all printed materials generated for the project. Within one year from the grant award date, a final report and financial accounting of the expenditure of the grant must be submitted. A final report form will be provided. If the project is not completed in accordance with the contract, the grant funds must be returned.Eligible ExpensesNonprofit applicants may include staff salaries for staff members directly working on the funded projectFees for consultant servicesSpeaker fees/faculty costs for educational programs and conference sessionsMailing costs for distribution of materialsThe development of materials for education and outreach campaignsMaterials and services such as printing, photographs, telephone, and supplies. With the exception of publications projects, these costs may not exceed 10 percent of the project budget. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member. Only Organizational Level Forum members or Main Street America members of the National Trust are eligible to apply for funding from the Henry A. Jordan, M.D. Preservation Excellence Fund.Ineligibility
Donated materials and services, staff salaries and organizational overhead costs are not eligible sources of a match.
