Grace and Phil Edelman Health Sciences Scholarship

Overview: A competitive scholarship for Southeast Alaska students pursuing professional health sciences degrees from accredited institutions.

Geographic Scope: Southeast Alaska residents

Focus Areas: Health sciences degrees (nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, clinical mental health counseling, family nurse practitioner, and related health professions)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Pursuing a professional health sciences degree from an accredited institution

  • Demonstrate intent to return to Southeast Alaska upon completion of degree

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Outstanding academic performance

  • Leadership and commitment to healthcare in their communities

  • Note: If transcript lists grades on Pass/Fail basis, applicants must obtain official GPA equivalency from academic institution

    • Background: The Grace and Phil Edelman Health Sciences Scholarship Endowment was established to support health sciences education and encourage graduates to return to Southeast Alaska to practice. Phillip Edelman (1/31/1917 - 03/26/2002) served in US Army (1935-1938) and Navy (1942 onwards) as a corpsman medic. Grace Edelman (12/17/1917 - 10/03/2006) and Phillip moved to Palmer, AK in 1950 and settled in Juneau in 1962. Both were active community members, including involvement with Masonic organizations. Upon their passing, they donated a substantial sum to Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation to support future medical leaders in Southeast Alaska.

    Funding History:

  • Since inception in 2009, the program has awarded more than $385,000 to Southeast Alaska students

  • 2025: 15 scholarships awarded totaling $31,000

  • 2024: 16 scholarships awarded (8 new scholars and 8 returning scholars)
