Overview

Golden Beavers Scholarships

Overview: The official scholarship program of the Ballard High School Golden Beavers (the alumni association), now part of the Ballard High School Foundation. Since 1988, the program has awarded over $1.2 million in scholarships to more than 500 students.

Focus: Scholarships for deserving Ballard High School seniors preparing for post-high school education, including college and trade education in Washington state.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a Ballard High School senior

  • Various named scholarships may have specific criteria (see below)
  • Named Scholarships Available:

  • Hughbanks Family Scholarships: Prioritize students with situational or financial need pursuing college or trade education in Washington state. Gifts dispersed over two years.

  • Laurie (Detert) Anderson '53 Memorial Scholarship: In memory of Laurie and her work with the Foundation

  • Richard "Dick" Mitchell '51 Memorial Scholarship: In gratitude for Dick's support and leadership

  • Tim Nygard '01 Ballard Legacy Scholarship: Awarded to two seniors with Ballard High School legacy roots who model character and compassion

  • John "Jack" Lawson '52 Memorial Scholarship: In memory of Jack Lawson, Past President and Scholarship Chair

  • Einar Johanson '47 Scholarship: In memory of Einar Johanson for significant support of the scholarship program

  • Judy Olson Rikansrud '58 Scholarship: In memory of Foundation Board Member/Past President

  • McMuldroch-Lathrop Family Scholarships: Honors connection to Ballard High School; recognizes the power of educational awards
  • Geographic Scope: Ballard High School seniors; some scholarships prioritize Washington state

    Leadership: Scholarship Committee co-chaired by Ryan Carlisle '93 and Maggie Murphy Moffett '69, with eight committee members

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    1. Eligibility: Must be a Ballard High School senior
    2. Required Materials:
    - Letter of recommendation
    - Resume including:
    - School and community activities
    - Work experience
    - Special honors and awards
    3. Selection Process:
    - Committee of eight members reviews applications
    - Candidates are interviewed
    - Scholarship winners are selected
    4. Award Presentation: Winners are presented awards each spring at the Annual Scholarship Luncheon
