Organization Background

The Glass Recycling Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to provide and raise funds for localized and targeted assistance, demonstration and pilot projects that address gaps in the glass recycling supply chain across the United States.

    Funding Overview

Eligible Projects

Two categories of projects are allowed:

#### 1. Demonstration/Pilot Projects
Should address specific gaps in the glass recycling supply chain and provide alternative strategies strengthening glass end markets.

Examples of Potential Projects:

  • Equipment for cleaning recycled glass

  • Collection containers for glass drop-offs

  • Regional strategies for building collection & storage infrastructure for recycled glass

  • Haulers/hauling systems to increase collection
  • #### 2. Education Projects
    Projects must present a clear message and strategy for educating the public about environmental and community benefits of recycling glass and improving quality of diverted materials.

    Examples of Potential Projects:

  • Developing and presenting trainings about effective glass collection and recycling practices

  • Writing and disseminating case studies and guidance documents about best management practices

  • Developing signage for residential glass recycling drop-offs

  • Developing and disseminating ads/public education campaigns about glass recycling
    • Funding Preferences

    • Strong preference given to projects with third-party matching funding of 25% or more
    • Grant award cap: Not to exceed 50% of project or $30,000, whichever is less
    • Preference given to projects that make progress within one calendar year of receiving grant funds

      Recent Grant Awards (Examples)

    • 2023: Over $150,000 awarded across 11 projects, diverting nearly 1,660 tons of glass from landfills
    • - Fairfax, VA: $6,000 (Purple Can Club awareness campaign) - Justice Industries, Brentwood, TN: $6,000 (Just.Glass program expansion) - Bottle Underground, Philadelphia, PA: $18,000 (glass recycling infrastructure)
    • 2022: Nearly $70,000 awarded to programs in NC, OH, OK, and PA

    #### Pre-Application
    1. Attend the 2026 Grant Cycle Workshop on April 15, 2026, at 1pm EST for preview of upcoming cycle
    - Workshop covers: funding priorities, eligibility, timeline, evaluation criteria, tips for strong proposals
    - Recording will be available at www.glassrecycles.org
    - Register at workshop link provided on grants page

    #### Required Application Elements

    Applicants must be prepared to discuss and submit the following:

      1. Needs Assessment

    • Describe why the project/service is necessary
    • Explain the need for grant funds

      2. Project Goals and Objectives

    • Clearly state project goals
    • Objectives should:
    • - Clearly describe goals - Be concrete and specific enough to be quantitative or observable - Be feasible - Relate to the purpose of the project

      3. Project Narrative

      The narrative should detail:
    • Key project components
    • Your expertise for implementing the proposed project
    • Description of intended project outcomes
    • Total grant funds being requested
    • How the project will include collaboration to attain a consistent supply of glass

      4. Project Metrics

      List impact metrics including:
    • Required: New tons anticipated to be collected and recycled as a result of the project
    • Required: End markets for glass collected and recycled
    • Required: Number of households or population served, including new access for residents
    • Pounds or tons of glass collected
    • Pounds or tons of glass sent to beneficiation or end markets
    • Overall dollar/ton investment the project will aim to impact

      5. Budget and Budget Justification

    • Written justification for projected costs
    • Explain how budget figures were determined for each category
    • Indicate which costs are to be covered by grant funds
    • Indicate which costs will be met by your organization or other organizations
    • Note: Strong preference given to projects with third-party matching funding of 25% or more

      6. Evaluation Method(s)

      Describe evaluation method(s) to determine if objectives are being accomplished. Include performance benchmarks such as:
    • Amount of recovered glass
    • Distance to secondary processor (if necessary)
    • Timeline
    • Jobs created
    • Impact per total project spend

      7. Duration of Project

    • Briefly describe the duration of the project
    • Estimate time from grant approval to beginning of project or service
    • Preference: Projects that aim to make progress within one calendar year of receiving grant funds

      8. Sustainability

    • Briefly describe plans for increased self-sustainability in future years
    • Explain how the project will be sustained in the future without grant funds
