George Malloy Diversity Scholarship for Orton-Gillingham Training

Funder: Stratford Foundation Inc. (Massachusetts, US)

Status: Scholarship program established in honor of George Malloy and in partnership with the Orton-Gillingham Academy

Overview: Through this scholarship, a candidate from an under-represented group will be awarded an Associate-level Orton-Gillingham training and practicum through Stratford's Professional Training Institute.

Background

The Malloy family legacy has impacted Boston's educational landscape for nearly a century. Patriarch Matthew Malloy founded Stratford School in 1937. In 1947, he acquired and reactivated the Chamberlayne School and Chamberlayne Junior College. George Malloy, Matthew's son, later merged these institutions with Mount Ida College in 1987. The Stratford Foundation was formed from assets of the Chamberlayne-Mount Ida merger with a mission to be a valuable educational resource for the community.

George Malloy was the Foundation's first President. In 1988, Stratford opened the Commonwealth Learning Center, providing 1-to-1 tutoring and educational evaluation services. By 1992, Stratford established the Professional Training Institute offering research-based, multisensory teacher training.

Under George's leadership, the Foundation has:

  • Awarded millions of dollars in financial aid to hundreds of families unable to afford academic support

  • Granted funds to several hundred organizations doing important work in the community

  • Supported thousands of students through hundreds of thousands of tutoring hours
