General Grant Program - The Halle Foundation
Mission: The Halle Foundation promotes understanding, knowledge, and friendship between the people of Germany and the United States.
- Organizations located in Georgia, OR
- Non-Georgia organizations located in the United States with projects that exclusively serve beneficiaries in Georgia (e.g., Georgia students or teachers), OR
- Organizations located in Germany with projects that have a discernible connection to Georgia
Geographic Scope
- Core Requirement: Proposed project or activity must directly further the Foundation's core mission of promoting understanding, knowledge, and friendship between Germany and the United States
- Organizational Status: In most cases, grantee should be a publicly supported 501(c)(3) organization, or in the case of a German organization, the equivalent of an American publicly supported 501(c)(3) organization
Eligibility Requirements
- Organizations with strong leadership and proven track record of success
- Projects that exploit new opportunities or meet extraordinary needs
- Applications demonstrating broad base of financial support from multiple sources (in-kind, direct financial support, earned revenue, third-party funders)
- High degree of financial discipline
- Educational exchanges and travel programs with strong educational components (German language training, visits with business/government officials/academic partners, lectures/seminars/workshops, possibility of earning academic credit, pre-trip orientation and post-trip debriefing, supervision by well-credentialed faculty)
- Succinctly written applications with clear objectives
Funding Priorities & Preferences
- Unrestricted operating support
- New projects indefinitely
- Projects for which the Foundation is the only funder
- Projects without potential to become self-sustaining
- Grant commitments longer than two years (in most cases)
- Budget items including "reserve" amounts, "indirect cost" or similar overhead items
What the Foundation Does NOT Fund
- Board Meetings: Bi-annual, typically held in early summer and early winter
- Board of trustees typically does not consider grant requests between meetings
- Applicants will be contacted by email within one week of trustees meeting with information about Board action

- Respond specifically and persuasively to the application question regarding how the proposed project will advance the Foundation's mission
- Number of individuals expected to participate in the program
- How participants will be selected
- Project timing, basic content, and objectives
- For travel programs: estimated dates of travel, who and how many people will go, places they will visit, and activities they will engage in
- Demonstration of broad base of financial support from organization, constituencies, and/or third-party funders
- Evidence of financial discipline
4. Budget Requirements
- Follow the general formatting reflected in the sample budget provided on the website
- Should reflect financial discipline and appropriate cost-sharing
- Do NOT include "reserve" amounts, "indirect cost" or similar overhead items
- Express in US dollars
- Should not include wildly overstated projections for volatile items like airfares
