Sustainable Path Foundation Grant Program

Overview: The Sustainable Path Foundation awards grants to support sustainable projects in the Puget Sound Region that promote sustainability, health, and climate resiliency through collaborative approaches informed by scientific understanding and systems thinking.

Geographic Scope: Puget Sound Region of the Pacific Northwest, United States only

Focus Areas:

  • Climate change and decarbonization

  • Clean energy transitions

  • Water quality and watershed protection

  • Food systems and sustainable agriculture

  • Urban forest restoration and reforestation

  • Waste reduction and zero waste initiatives

  • Marine conservation and fisheries

  • Environmental justice and community engagement

  • Citizen science and environmental monitoring

  • Sustainable infrastructure and green building
  • Award Details:

  • Typical Award Range: Up to $20,000

  • Founders Award (Special): $10,000 (awarded annually to honor specific individuals)

  • Recurrence: Two grant cycles per year (Spring and Fall)

  • Pilot projects

  • Seed projects

  • Innovative sustainability projects

  • Citizen science and volunteer monitoring programs

  • Eligibility:

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations

  • One letter of inquiry per organization per grant cycle

  • Projects must support the foundation's sustainability mission
  • Exclusions - The Foundation Does NOT Fund:

  • Capital projects

  • Equipment (unless directly related to the grant)

  • Endowments

  • Political campaigns, candidates, or lobbying activities

  • Direct grants or loans to individuals

  • International projects

  • General fund drives or annual appeals
  • Grant Cycle Timeline:

  • Spring Cycle: Letters of Inquiry (LOIs) accepted March 1-31; Finalists notified in April; Grants awarded by June 30

  • Fall Cycle: LOIs accepted August 15-September 15; Finalists notified in October; Grants awarded by December 31

  • Reporting: Grantees submit progress reports at 6 months and final reports at 1 year
  • Decision Process:

  • Foundation uses an "Impact Circle" model

  • Community partners strategically determine which projects to fund

  • Annual seminar series topics selected based on Impact Circle focus areas

    #### Grant Cycle and Deadlines

    Application Windows:

  • Spring Cycle: March 1-31 (Letters of Inquiry only)

  • Fall Cycle: August 15-September 15 (Letters of Inquiry only)

  • Proposals submitted outside these windows will not be reviewed
  • #### Application Process

    1. Submit Letter of Inquiry (LOI)
    - Submit online form only (via website)
    - One LOI per nonprofit organization per grant cycle
    - Deadline: During specified application window (March 1-31 or August 15-September 15)

    2. Initial Screening
    - Foundation reviews all LOIs
    - Screening occurs in April (for Spring cycle) or October (for Fall cycle)

    3. Finalist Notification
    - Selected finalists notified to either:
    - Submit a full proposal, and/or
    - Participate in a Zoom informational interview

    4. Full Proposal Submission
    - Submit detailed project proposal (if requested)
    - Format: Follow foundation guidelines

    5. Award Decision
    - Grants awarded by June 30 (Spring cycle) or December 31 (Fall cycle)
