About the Scholarships Program Coral Gables Community Foundation is honored to partner with our fundholders to administer generous scholarships as well as manage the Foundation’s own scholarship funds. The Foundation and its fundholders have proudly awarded over $2.9 million in scholarships in just the last decade. Most scholarships offered through the Foundation’s scholarship program are based on academic achievement and financial need. The Ervin A. Gonzalez Scholarship Fund The Ervin A. Gonzalez Scholarship Fund was established by the Coral Gables Bar Association in 2017 in Ervin’s memory. The Ervin A. Gonzalez Scholarship provides college tuition assistance to a graduating high school senior who has shown an interest in pursuing a career in law, political science, public policy or related fields. Overall academic success, an interest in civics and the law and an intention to become a lawyer are factors in the selection process. About Ervin Gonzalez A Coral Gables resident, Ervin A. Gonzalez (1960-2017) was a premier civil trial attorney who led some of the most significant personal-injury and class-action cases in Florida and nationally. He was a partner with the prominent Coral Gables law firm Colson Hicks Eidson and gave back to his community. Ervin served as governor of The Florida Bar, president of the Dade County Bar Association, president of the Dade County Trial Lawyers Association, a member of the National Board of Trustees of The National Institute of Trial Advocacy, and the American Board of Trial Advocates. He also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Miami School of Law where he enjoyed mentoring young law students. Value This is a one-year scholarship. The value of the scholarship varies each year. Checks are sent directly from the Coral Gables Community Foundation to the bursar’s office of the recipient’s college or university. In 2024 this fund made three, one-year awards of $3,000 each. In 2025 there were three, one-year awards of $4,000 each..

RequirementsApplicant must anticipate attending law school after college Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher Attend public or private high school in Coral Gables or attends Immaculata-La Salle High School (Ervin’s alma mater) Possess a financial needRules for all Applicants Be living in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam or Canada Be graduating high school seniors (U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam), graduating from grade 12 or graduating from home school education in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam or Canada Plan to enroll full-time, without interruption, for the entire 2024-25 academic year at an accredited four-year college, university or vocational-technical school in the United States. After an award is made, for any multi year scholarship the student must submit their college transcript (unofficial is OK) at the end of each year to trigger the release of a payment for the second year. Student must be passing all classes that they attempted, and they must have a 3.0 GPA or better (Some scholarships include stricter standards for renewal).
