Overview

Edward Phillips Memorial Scholarship

Funder: Kansas Rural Communities Foundation

Overview: This scholarship is awarded in memory of Ed Phillips (1953-2013), a non-traditional student who overcame significant challenges. Ed grew up as one of 13 children on a farm in Valley Falls, Kansas, where education was revered as a core family value. After earning a Bachelor's degree from Kansas State University in Agricultural Education and beginning to teach at St. George High School, he was diagnosed with a large benign spinal cord tumor. His removal left him an incomplete quadriplegic. Despite this disability, he pursued further education at Kansas State University's graduate school and went on to work at Kaw Valley State Bank, eventually serving as Senior Vice President and Chairman of the Mortgage Loan Department.
