COVID-19 Arts and Creative Community Assistance Fund

Geographic Scope: Southeast Michigan (seven counties: Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Washtenaw, St. Clair, Livingston)

Program Purpose: Help nonprofit arts and culture organizations relieve financial pressures generated by COVID-19 pandemic and plan for/pivot to new mission-related opportunities. Support innovative ways for organizations to creatively connect with audiences while adhering to social distancing regulations.

Launch Date: 2020

2021 Awards (5 organizations, $275,000 total):

  • Michigan Opera Theatre: $55,000 (outdoor theatre experiences, COVID-compliant summer season)

  • Detroit Historical Society: $55,000 (community engagement, technology, design for experiencing Detroit history in public spaces)

  • Accent Pontiac: $55,000 (Porch Lessons program - outdoor music lessons at students' homes)

  • Heritage Works: $55,000 (digital community building, creative placemaking, West African traditions)

  • Young Nation: $55,000 (casita construction for arts-based popular education in southwest Detroit)
