Organization: The MOAA Foundation (formerly MOAA Military Family Initiative)

Geographic Scope: National; available to MOAA councils and chapters

Focus Areas: Grants support MOAA councils or chapters actively providing direct programs and services to uniformed servicemembers and veteran families in one of eight areas of critical family need:

• Housing
• Food assistance
• Employment
• Health (including behavioral health)
• Family strength
• Community reintegration
• Financial and legal assistance
• Transportation

Eligibility:

• Must be an MOAA council or chapter
• Must be actively involved in the delivery of community services
• Must meet basic grant administration requirements
• Can provide services directly or through partnerships with other community organizations

Funding History:

• 2017 inaugural cycle: $25,000 total distributed; 7 eligible applications from 9 submissions
• Top four highest-scoring chapters received additional $1,250 supplemental grants from Homes for Heroes Foundation
• 2018 cycle: Applications accepted (deadline details in application materials)

Application Process

Submission Method:

• Online application available on MOAA website

Required Materials:

• Completion of grant application form
• Demonstration of active community service delivery
• Evidence of basic grant administration capabilities
• Description of programs/services in one of eight focus areas

Review Process:

• Applications reviewed by panel of judges (comprised of MOAA Military Family Initiative and MOAA board members)
• Rating criteria used to evaluate submissions
• Councils and chapters with highest scores receive awards and additional considerations for supplemental grants

Key Requirements:

• Applicant must be established MOAA council or chapter
• Services must benefit uniformed servicemembers and/or veteran families
• Can demonstrate partnership capacity with other community organizations
