Community Impact Grants

Funder: 1889 Foundation in partnership with United Way of the Southern Alleghenies

Geographic Scope: Cambria and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania

Program Status: Active (1889 Foundation has provided $5+ million in funding since 2015 as challenge grant)

Award Structure:

• Large Grants: $50,000 - $200,000 for evidence-based programming addressing social change
• Smaller Grants: $5,000 - $50,000 for additional health and human services programming

Primary Focus Areas:

• Preparing all children socially, emotionally, and academically for kindergarten
• Increasing parental knowledge of child development and care
• Preventing youth drug and alcohol use
• Additional health and human services programming

Program Characteristics:

• Distributed annually to high-performing non-profit organizations
• Awarded by volunteer-driven committee and review panels
• Currently supporting 30 programs delivered by 25 partner agencies
• Recipients must be high-performing organizations

Eligibility:

• Non-profit organizations in Cambria and Somerset Counties

• Explain how results will be measured
• Site visits are required

2. Complete application detailing:
   • Program description and methods
   • Desired outcomes
   • Results measurement plan
3. Submit application to United Way
4. Participate in required site visit
5. Review by volunteer-driven committee and review panels
6. Awards distributed annually
