Community Grant Program

Funder: ARH Foundation for Healthier Communities

Mission: To further healthcare, education, and community involvement in Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia through philanthropy and fundraising for Appalachian Regional Healthcare.

Program Overview

The ARH Foundation accepts grant applications on a continuous/rolling basis from nonprofit organizations within their service area. Grants will not exceed $5,000.

    Funding Criteria

    All proposals must demonstrate:
  • Sound plan to increase health and well-being of a group or community within ARH Service Region
  • Specific and measurable goals for project evaluation
  • Desire to promote coordination and collaboration among organizations to prevent duplication of services
  • Evidence of realistic organizational planning and management

    Geographic Scope

    Service Areas:
  • Eastern Kentucky
  • Southern West Virginia
  • Programs outside these areas may be considered if they provide direct services to residents within these regions

    Eligibility

  • Eligible Organizations: Nonprofit organizations deemed tax-exempt under sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code and governmental agencies serving the aforementioned areas
  • One Grant Per Year: Agencies may submit only one grant application per year
  • Reapplication Waiting Period: Organizations (including co-applicants) that have received a grant from the ARH Foundation must wait five years to reapply
  • The Foundation reserves the right to change eligibility criteria as it continues to evolve

    Project Areas Considered for Funding

  • Education: Activities that promote or strengthen health and healthy lifestyle education
  • Health: Activities that improve health outcomes
  • Human Services: Activities that support public protection, employment/jobs, food and nutrition, agriculture, housing and shelter, public safety, disaster preparedness, and relief
  • Other Civic Endeavors: Activities that enhance health and quality of life in communities
  • Project may be new, expansion/modification of existing program, or collaborative effort

    Project Areas NOT Considered for Funding

  • Capital or Endowment Campaigns
  • Requests for funding to reduce or retire organization debt
  • Political parties or campaigns
  • Operating costs not directly related to proposed project
  • Event sponsorships, annual appeals, and membership contributions
  • Travel expenses for groups or individuals (bands, sports teams, classes)
  • Scholarships or other grants to individuals

Grant awards are made in April, July, October, and January

How to Apply

1. Complete Online Application: Fill out the online application thoroughly with all requested attachments
2. Submit Completely: Incomplete applications will not be considered
3. Foundation Review: Foundation staff will review the application and submit eligible applications to the Foundation Board for review at their quarterly meeting
4. Approval Decision: Approval is at the sole discretion of the Foundation Staff and Board based on quality of application and funds currently available
5. Award Notification: Awards are made in April, July, October, and January

  • Project continuation plan and funding sustainability for year one and beyond

  • Number of individuals to be served
    • Submission Requirements
