Program Purpose: Provides planning grants to help non-profit organizations determine the feasibility of developing and operating a community garden at their agency.

Geographic Scope

• Agencies not currently operating community gardens (those with existing gardens should apply through regular Hunger and Homeless Grants program)

What They Fund

• Planning and feasibility study costs
• Professional consulting services for garden development assessment

What They Don't Fund

• Equipment, storage, or refrigeration for agencies already operating gardens (use regular grant process for these)

Key Background

• Over 300 food shelves operate in Minnesota
• Approximately 20% currently operate community gardens
• Gardens provide fresh produce nutrition, community building opportunities, and can generate volunteer engagement and educational programs
