About Us

The Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) was founded in 2012 by Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty in honor of her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite.

CLF invests in climate solution initiatives in the Caribbean & United States and helps communities prepare for and withstand natural disasters.

Our Work - Centered Around Three Core Pillars

Climate Resilience

By investing in preparedness and working with on-the-ground partners, we are enabling more communities to better withstand natural disasters before they hit. Our projects provide clear models of what resiliency looks like that can be replicated across the region and beyond, furthering CLF’s mission to help the Caribbean become the world’s first climate-resilient zone.

Our Climate Resilience Initiative (CRI) is focused on investing in emergency preparedness and climate adaptation of health, shelter and communication projects across the Caribbean.

By investing in preparedness and working with on-the-ground partners, we are enabling more communities to better withstand natural disasters before they hit.

CRI projects, which range from infrastructure hardening projects to gender-integrated emergency response planning in the Caribbean, serve as models that can be replicated and scaled to enable other high-risk regions around the world to be better prepared to withstand the effects of climate change.

Climate Justice

In 2021, CLF established the Climate Justice pillar - a fund supporting the collective rights of people, organizations, and movements in the U.S. and Caribbean to advance communities that are regenerative, sustainable, and in harmony with the earth to reduce further climate changes. CLF’s climate justice grants help support organizations as they reimagine and implement short and long-term up to climate impacts in a way that integrates cultural resources into decision-making and advances environmental and racial justice.

CLF works alongside partner organizations and climate solutions leaders, acknowledging their deep understanding of what is necessary to achieve justice in their own communities.

Our climate solutions grants provide funds to organizations in the U.S. and Caribbean focused on reimagining and implementing short and long-term solutions for climate impacts. These organizations integrate cultural considerations into decision-making, and work to advance environmental and societal causes.

Legacy

Barbados, the home of our Founder, remains central to CLF’s work. From the Barbados Scholarship Program, climate resilience work with local schools and health clinics, to the continued support of our first-ever partner, Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Our work in our Founder’s home country of Barbados remains a key priority for us. We support a variety of initiatives in Barbados including climate resilience projects for local schools and health clinics, a scholarship program, and ongoing support for our very first partner — the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
