Overview

Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut (CFECT) was founded in 1983 to serve 42 towns across the eastern region of the state. With an asset base exceeding $120 million and over $100 million awarded in grants and scholarships, the Foundation acts as a philanthropic hub connecting donors to community needs and opportunities. Its mission is to collaborate with partners to put philanthropy into action—addressing the needs, rights, and interests of the people of Eastern Connecticut. Guided by values of equity, social justice, transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, CFECT focuses on four key priorities: empowering youth, advancing basic needs and rights, preserving the environment, and promoting animal welfare. Through grantmaking, advocacy, and collaboration, the Foundation works to eliminate racial and economic disparities, uplift historically marginalized voices, and create lasting, positive change for a more equitable and sustainable future. Caryn Nesbitt, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Established in memory of Dr. Caryn Nesbitt, an emergency room physician at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. Caryn recognized the critical need for primary care and preventive medicine services for women in our area. She was a pioneer in the delivery of medical services specifically designed to address the unique concerns of women, founding the Women's Care Medical Center in Groton in September 1991. Caryn was passionate about offering a place where women could go and be treated in a comfortable atmosphere and obtain a wide range of services in one location.
