Beverly Maasak Ahgeak Memorial Scholarship

Funder: Barrow Utilities and Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BUECI)

Background: The Beverly "Maasak" Ahgeak Memorial Scholarship was established on March 31, 2009, by the BUECI Board of Directors in memory of director Beverly Maasak Ahgeak, who gave 21 years of dedicated service as a director for BUECI from 1988 until 2008. Maasak served primarily as Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Directors.

Award Details:

Amount: $1,500 per scholarship

Number of Awards: Five (5) scholarships for the 2026 cycle

Note: The amount and number of scholarships may be changed by the board of directors year to year

Funding Source: Scholarships are funded through the tariff rates paid by members of the Cooperative

Eligibility Requirements

Applicant or applicant's parent/guardian must be a member of the Cooperative
Recipient must have received or intend to receive a high school diploma or equivalent in Barrow (including home school) or a boarding school within the State of Alaska
At the time funding is disbursed, recipients must be active full-time or part-time students enrolled at an educational institution within the United States or its territories
Must be beginning an educational program or apprenticeship program
These are nonrenewable scholarships

Review and Award Process

Applications will be reviewed by BUECI administration and the BUECI Board of Directors
Scholarships will be awarded to applicants based on their response to the scholarship criteria
Expected award announcement: May 2026

School Location: High school diploma/equivalent in Barrow or boarding school in Alaska; post-secondary education in United States or its territories
