Overview

ASAHP Student Scholarship of Excellence

Purpose: Recognizes outstanding students in the health professions who are achieving excellence in their academic programs and have significant potential to assume future leadership roles in health professions.

Award Amount:

  • $1,000 scholarship per recipient

  • Additional $1,000 award and title of "Elwood Scholar" for the most outstanding recipient (starting 2014)

  • For 2026, seven students are expected to be selected
  • Geographic Scope: United States (ASAHP member institutions)

    Eligibility:

  • Must be enrolled in a college or school that is an institutional member of ASAHP

  • Must have successfully completed at least one term (quarter, semester, trimester, etc.) at that institution

  • May be enrolled in any health discipline EXCEPT nursing, public health, psychology, or MOD-VOPP group (medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy)

  • Must be enrolled in a career entry-level, degree-granting program (associate, baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degrees eligible)

  • Financial need is NOT a criterion for eligibility

  • Winners will be recognized in ASAHP UPDATE and various publications

  • Scholarship check and certificate will be sent under signatures of ASAHP President and Executive Director

  • Institutions are encouraged to publicize the awards
  • How to Apply

    Nomination Process

    Nomination Procedure:
    1. Each eligible institution may nominate one candidate per round
    2. Nomination packet must be submitted via online form by 11:59pm Pacific Time on deadline

    Required Materials:
    1. Letter endorsed by the ASAHP Institutional Representative that:
    - Supports the nomination
    - Describes qualities of the candidate related to qualifications
    2. Current nominee's resumé/CV
    3. One-page (max 200 words) typewritten essay from nominee addressing:
    - Why the nominee selected the health profession for which they are enrolled
    - What unique contributions they intend to make to the community's health

    Selection Process:

  • Applications reviewed by select group of ASAHP members (e.g., Past-Presidents or Board members)

  • Seven students selected for scholarship awards

  • One of seven selected as Elwood Scholar
  • Notification:

  • Winners notified after recognition in ASAHP UPDATE

  • Letters sent under signatures of ASAHP President and Executive Director

  • Scholarship check and certificate included with letter
