NOTE: Any APA member may nominate any other eligible APA member for the Lisska Prize. Nominations will remain active for three years and may be renewed. Anthony J. Lisska Prize for Excellence in Research and Teaching at Small Liberal Arts Colleges This prize is sponsored by Denison University in partnership with the American Philosophical Association to honor the legacy of Dr. Anthony J. Lisska (1940–2022), who taught at Denison for fifty-two years. Lisska was the founding director of the Denison Honors Program, served as Dean of the college, and was named Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year in 1994. A highly regarded Aquinas scholar, Lisska published Aquinas's Theory of Natural Law (Oxford, 1998) and Aquinas's Theory of Perception (Oxford, 2016). His profound impact on Denison University was recognized with the rededication of Denison's Gilpatrick Center as the Lisska Center for Intellectual Engagement in 2016. The Anthony J. Lisska Prize will be awarded in recognition of exemplary contributions to the scholarly mission of small liberal arts colleges through accomplishment in both philosophical research and pedagogical achievement. Funding The prize recipient will receive a $1,000 award and a commemorative plaque presented during the annual prize reception at an APA divisional meeting.

Eligibility

Eligibility is restricted to APA members who are tenured philosophy faculty at a liberal arts college of no more than 5,000 students. The winner will be selected on the basis of pedagogical contributions (e.g., renowned, innovative, or award-winning teaching) and a body of significant peer-reviewed research including journal articles, books, and book reviews. In selecting a winner, the selection committee will prioritize the efforts of faculty who have clear success in both areas rather than prioritizing only one area of accomplishment. Nominations will remain active for three years and may be renewed. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member. Eligibility is restricted to APA members who are tenured philosophy faculty at a liberal arts college of no more than 5,000 students.

Ineligibility

Self-nominations are not permitted.Current members of the selection committee and of the APA’s Committee on Lectures, Publications, and Research are ineligible.
