ANA Awards for Excellence

Funder: The American Neurological Association

Purpose: Recognize individuals who have made exceptional and important contributions to the field of neurology and neuroscience

Award Details:

  • Number of Awards: Up to three individuals annually

  • Honorarium: $1,000

  • Benefits: Gratis Annual Meeting registration and Commemorative Plaque
  • Award Categories:

      Category 1: Clinical and Scientific Excellence

      Recognizes novel scientific contributions that reshape the field's conceptual understanding, or sustained contributions in:
    • Novel scientific contributions: Reshape understanding of specific neurological syndromes or diseases
    • Therapeutics: Novel or sustained contributions to development of new therapeutics, including identification of new agents, development of novel clinical trial strategies, or sustained leadership of clinical trials
    • Diagnostics: Major contributions that transform or expand diagnostic tools (technologies, data science, computational approaches)
    • Eligibility: Not limited to ANA members

      Category 2: Education

      Recognizes sustained and transformative impact on neurology education that has been widely adopted outside candidate's home institution and reshaped training nationally or internationally
    • Eligibility: Not limited to ANA members

      Category 3: Service to the ANA

      Recognizes high impact contributions to ANA through service as officer, board member, committee chair, task force leader, or other administrative role resulting in substantial, meaningful, and measurable positive change
    • Eligibility: Must be ANA member in good standing

      Category 4: Contribution in Senior Administrative Role

      Recognizes outstanding contributions in senior administrative roles over sustained period in:
    • Government (NIH, FDA, CDC, HHS)
    • Industry
    • Scientific societies (SFN, AAN, CNS, International Societies)
    • Academic institutions
    • Eligibility: Not limited to ANA members

    Application Requirements

    Required Materials:

    1. Nominee Statement
    - Describe the contribution for which award is proposed
    - Should not exceed two (2) double-spaced pages
    - Additional important contributions of similar weight to listed categories will be considered

    2. Nominee CV
    - Should be highlighted to indicate:
    - Specific activities
    - Grants
    - Publications
    - Talks
    - Other forms of recognition
    - Highlighting should demonstrate nature and impact of contribution

    3. Two (2) Letters of Support
    - Nomination Letter: From nominator
    - Seconding Letter: Preferably from individual outside nominee's institution
    - Each letter should not exceed two (2) pages
    - Letters must focus on detailing area of contribution and specifically indicate:
    - Whether award is proposed for career-based contributions over prolonged period (typically >15-20 years), OR
    - Discrete contributions over limited period (typically <15 years)
