About the AJS The Association for Jewish Studies (AJS) was founded in 1969 by a small group of scholars seeking a forum for exploring methodological and pedagogical issues in the new field of Jewish Studies. Since its founding, the AJS has grown into the largest learned society and professional organization representing Jewish Studies scholars worldwide. As a constituent organization of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Association for Jewish Studies represents the field in the larger arena of the academic study of the humanities and social sciences in North America. Mission AJS’s mission is to advance research and teaching in Jewish Studies at colleges, universities, and other institutions of higher learning, and to foster greater understanding of Jewish Studies scholarship among the wider public. AJS Dissertation Completion Fellowship Competition Recipients may receive up to $33,000 as well as complimentary registration fees to the 2025 AJS Annual Conference. The AJS Dissertation Completion Fellowships will be awarded based on merit and need. 57th Annual Conference Marriott Marquis Washington DC December 14–16, 2025 Washington, DC The Annual Conference of the Association for Jewish Studies is the largest annual international gathering of Jewish Studies scholars in the world. With more than 1200 attendees, over 190 sessions, a major book exhibit of leading publishers, cultural programming, plenary, and awards, the AJS annual conference provides a unique opportunity to share ideas and explore the world of Jewish Studies scholarship.Eligibility

Only students who are in the final stages of writing their dissertations and who display clear evidence of their ability to defend their dissertations by the end of June of the fellowship year are eligible to apply for this program.The applicant must be completing a dissertation in the field of Jewish Studies.Applicants must be current members of the AJS at the time of application (the current membership period runs from January to December).Applicants must have completed all requirements of the PhD except the dissertation (ABD status) by the application deadline.The dissertation must be in English, although citations may be in other languages provided translations are included.Recipients of a Dissertation Completion Fellowship may not receive total grant support in excess of $33,000 during their fellowship year.Fellowship recipients must submit evidence of any additional funding, at which point the AJS fellowship amount may be reduced to account for these extra funds. This fellowship will thus serve as a “top-off” award for recipients with additional funding. Recipients without any other funding will be eligible to receive $33,000, the full amount of the award.
