Sam Stern Memorial Sabra Scholarship

Geographic Scope: Durham-Chapel Hill area, North Carolina

Award:

  • One camper awarded 2 free weeks in Camp Sabra (middle school program of Camp Shelanu day camp)

  • 2 weeks of tuition covered at no cost
  • Eligibility:

  • Campers entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade for the upcoming school year

  • Campers who would not otherwise be able to attend camp (financial need)

  • Priority given to under-represented groups:

  • - Racial minorities
    - Members of the LGBTQ+ community
    - Those with disabilities
  • Being part of the Jewish community is NOT required for eligibility

  • Campers eligible for scholarship for one year only
  • Program Details:
    Camp Sabra is the middle school program of Camp Shelanu day camp featuring:

  • Nature activities

  • Arts

  • Sports

  • STEM

  • Daily swim

  • Weekly field trips

  • Families must provide transportation and lunch

  • Jewish values and traditions included; campers of all backgrounds welcome
  • Background:
    Scholarship created in memory of Samantha Stern (1991-2022), who had an indelible impact on Camp Shelanu's creation and culture. Sam was a JCC Without Walls counselor (2008-2010) and one of Camp Shelanu's founding staff members (2011). She was instrumental in creating the affirming, positive, fun atmosphere campers continue to love.

    Additional Support:
    Applicants who do not receive the Sam Stern scholarship will be eligible for need-based partial scholarships from the general scholarship fund with no additional application required.

    Application Process

    Deadline: January 10 (for Summer 2026)

  • After January 10, applications reviewed on rolling basis as long as funds remain available
  • How to Apply:
    1. Submit the standard Camp Shelanu scholarship application
    2. Note that you are interested in the "Sam Stern Memorial Sabra Scholarship"
    3. Answer the following two required questions:
    - Question 1: This scholarship is intended for a camper to benefit from camp where they otherwise would be unlikely to attend. Please write one paragraph about what you would hope your camper would get out of two weeks at Camp Shelanu.
    - Question 2: Priority is given to under-represented groups, including racial minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those with disabilities. Being part of the Jewish community is not required for eligibility. Please share anything you would like us to consider about your camper's identity related to these groups.

  • All documentation requirements included in the application form
