Adolph Stutz Memorial Scholarship

Funder: International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers (IAM), District Lodge 141

Geographic Scope: IAM District Lodge 141 members and their families

Focus Areas: Educational support through essay competition for high school seniors and college students

Eligibility

  • Children, spouses, and dependent grandchildren (as defined by IRS) of members with one year or more of good standing (as of June 1 of the prior year) in District Lodge 141 who are:
  • - Graduating high school seniors - Currently enrolled full time in college - Commencing college full time
  • IAM members with one year or more of good standing in District Lodge 141 who are:
  • - Currently enrolled in college with a minimum of six units per semester

Ineligibility

  • District Lodge 141 officers and their families
  • Past winners of the award
  • Applicants not submitting complete applications
  • Applicants whose essays are not their own work

Award Details

  • One overall winner: $2,000
  • Six placement winners: $1,000 each
  • Awards presented at winners' Local Lodges after confirmation of student enrollment at accredited institution
  • Only one award per family per year

Background

Annual essay competition sponsored by District Lodge 141. Essay topics vary by year (past topics include "Why are Labor Unions Important in Today's Economy?" and "How can our Local Lodges better serve our communities?").

How to Apply

Application Process

1. Download application form from District Lodge 141 website
2. Write essay meeting the following requirements:
- Minimum 700 words, maximum 1,000 words
- Submitted as Microsoft Word document
- Printed on 8.5" x 11" white bond paper
- Include recent photograph of applicant
- Title placed on top of paper
- Entrant's name or identification on each page
- Bibliography of sources required
- Must be original work of entrant

3. Obtain signatures on application form from:
- Your Local Lodge President OR
- Your Local Lodge Recording Secretary

4. Prepare submission materials:
- Completed entry form and printed essay in envelope
- Write "SCHOLARSHIP" in lower left corner of envelope
- Electronic version of essay (Microsoft Word document)

5. Mail submission to:
- Scholarship Committee Chairperson (address provided in application)
- Postmark deadline: Check current year deadline (varies annually)

6. Email electronic copy to: dan@bleicomm.com
