Access to Care Grants - One Year

Geographic Scope: United States and U.S. Territories

Focus Areas:

  • Child oral health care (ages 18 and younger, with particular interest in ages 8 and younger)

  • Special health care needs for children

  • Clinic supplies, instruments & equipment

  • Education and outreach to recruit dentist participation

  • Support programs that provide treatment for children in need
  • Approved Use of Funds:

  • Salaries (dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, patient coordinators)

  • Dental instruments and equipment

  • Anesthesia and sedation services

  • Bilingual staff members

  • Educational pamphlets

  • Transportation and car rides

  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and take-home supplies

  • Meal costs

  • Any expense directly linked to children receiving regular dental care
  • Eligibility - Can Apply:

  • Nonprofit 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6) organizations

  • Local health jurisdictions

  • County health departments

  • Hospitals and clinics

  • State government agencies

  • Colleges/schools of dentistry

  • Colleges/schools of medicine (pediatric and family medicine departments only)

  • National, state, and local dental societies

  • Non-pediatric dentist programs (priority given to projects with pediatric dental leadership)

  • Hygienist-based programs (under direct supervision of a dentist)

  • Resident-based programs (licensed dentist overseeing all patients)

    Application Process

    Current Status:
    The 2026-2027 One Year Access to Care Grant application is currently closed. Next call for applications will be Summer 2026.

    Application Steps:
    1. Wait for application opening announcement (Summer 2026)
    2. Access application portal using organization credentials
    3. Log in with organization username and password
    4. Complete all required application fields
    5. Submit application through portal

  • Application Evaluation Process:
    Applications undergo three rounds of comprehensive reviews:

    1. Initial Review: Every eligible application is evaluated by a pair of AAPD Foundation members to assess proposals and select best-scoring applications

    2. Grants and Programs Committee Review: Members of the grants committee and at least four pediatric dentists evaluate each application using the same scoring system. Committee convenes to make final evaluations and recommendations to the Board of Trustees

    3. Board of Trustees Review: Board receives recommended applications and their rankings for final consideration and approval

  • Important Notes:

  • Reviewers evaluate ONLY what is provided in the application

  • Foundation may seek additional information for applications in later review stages

  • Previous grantees can reapply; no cap on number of applications

  • Being a previous grantee does not guarantee future support

  • Rural organizations and those serving smaller patient populations are not disadvantaged

  • Organizations from first three years of incorporation are considered "startups"
