2026 NHS Community Grants

Funder: Northwest Horticultural Society (NHS)

Geographic Scope: Priority given to organizations based in Washington state, west of the Cascade Mountains

Eligible Applicants:

  • 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations

  • Organizations sponsored by a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a letter of support from the sponsoring agency
  • Funding Objectives:
    NHS invites applications for horticulture projects and/or programs that further one or more of the following:

  • Provide education, increase access and/or increase participation in horticulture to a local community (natural lands, gardens, community vegetable gardens, or other horticultural space and/or activities)

  • Implement environmental cleanup and/or restoration in publicly accessible spaces, enhancing horticultural beauty and biodiversity while benefiting the surrounding community

  • Serve historically marginalized communities, including Indigenous peoples of the Coast Salish, people of color, and low-income neighborhoods through horticulture experiences and projects
  • Project Requirements:

  • Project or program should focus on a specific outcome to be completed within 12 months of receipt of funds

  • Funds must be entirely expended within 12 months

  • Project may be a portion of a larger project

  • Staffing dollars may only reimburse staffing specific to the proposed project's completion
  • Selection Criteria:

  • Extent or reach – people or communities served and how success will be measured

  • Impact – how the project will make a difference in horticulture and community

  • Project rationale – gap being filled, opportunity being realized

  • Financials – organization demonstrates need and shows why grant funds are necessary; additional funds dedicated to project

  • Practicality – project is achievable within scope, timeline, and existing organizational resources

  • Past and current performance – organization has demonstrated ability to achieve this type of program

  • Board approval: Early September 2026

    1. NHS Community Grants application form
    2. Applicant organization's mission statement and (if available) vision and values statements
    3. List of directors and officers and structural chart of all parties involved
    4. Contact information for:
    - Person(s) responsible for fiscal management and project execution
    - Person(s) responsible for final report
    - Person(s) for correspondence
    5. Brief narrative description including:
    - Project/program goals
    - How the project achieves one or more NHS funding objectives
    - How project success and outcomes will be measured
    6. Funds requested and project budget explanation:
    - Whether follow-up funding will be required
    - Whether project is part of larger project with extended timeframe
    - Any matching funds or other funding available
    - If staffing included, how it contributes to project realization and feasibility
    7. Other pertinent information about project and organization
    8. Project timeline and schedule:
    - Projected completion date
    - Date by which NHS will receive project success report
    9. Supporting documents:
    - Applicant organization's annual report (if available)
    - Most recent financial statement
    - Most recent IRS Form 990

  • Post-Award Requirements:

    • Maintain communication with NHS liaison assigned to organization
    • Submit written request for approval if project timeline cannot be met
    • Submit reallocation proposal if grant funds need to be reallocated (NHS Board approval required if amount exceeds $1,000)
    • Return any unspent funds within 30 days of project completion
    • Submit brief written final report within 60 days of project completion including:
    • - Challenges and successes - Financial summary signed by project leaders and/or fiscal sponsor affirming proper expenditure - If part of larger project, information on NHS-funded portion and impact
    • Submit annual progress reports as follow-up until whole project is completed
    • (Optional) Provide feedback on application and grant process
