About Pitt Hyde: Joseph R. "Pitt" Hyde III is a nationally known entrepreneur and philanthropist. After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1965 with a degree in economics, he joined Malone & Hyde, the wholesale food company founded by his grandfather in 1907. Under his leadership, Malone & Hyde became the United States' third largest wholesale food distributor with annual sales exceeding $3 billion. In 1979, he established AutoZone Inc., guiding its growth from one store to a retail auto parts giant with more than 4,800 stores across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Mexico. He retired as CEO and chairman in 1997 and remains on the AutoZone board of directors. In 2004, Hyde was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame for his innovations in auto parts sales and service.
