Mission & Focus Areas
Mission: Making structural steel the material of choice. AISC partners with the architecture, engineering, and construction community to develop safe and efficient steel specifications and codes while driving innovation to make steel the most sustainable, economic, and resilient structural material.
Primary Focus Areas:
Quality Certification Programs: Confirm to the construction industry that certified structural steel fabricating plants and erector companies have the necessary personnel, organization, experience, procedures, knowledge, equipment, capability, and commitment to produce fabricated steel of required quality. In 2023, 2,007 audits were completed.
Research Support: The institute supports various research projects of interest to the structural steel industry through grants to universities and other non-profit organizations.
Awards & Recognition: Issues the T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award to outstanding lecturers and authors whose technical papers are considered outstanding contributions to engineering literature on fabricated structural steel. Winners receive a cash award and present lectures at professional association events.
Education & Workforce Development: Offers continuing education, university programs, fabricator education training, and K-12 initiatives.
Standards & Publications: Develops and publishes technical standards, design guides, manuals, and educational materials for the structural steel industry.
