Youth Freedom Fund

Award Amount: $500 mini-grants

Geographic Scope: United States (all states)

Program Focus: Provides funding to GSA clubs to support youth-led projects and organizing work. Funding can be used for events, projects, campaigns, or activities that keep collective work moving forward.

Eligible Activities

Projects can focus on three directions:

  • Gather: Bring trans and queer students together through recruitment campaigns, field trips exploring LGBTQ+ history, tablings, movie screenings, or community-building events

  • Support: Raise awareness and create space for healing through educational resources, awareness day events (like Transgender Day of Visibility), guest speakers, or inclusive school culture initiatives

  • Take Action: Center activism and advocacy through campaigns challenging policies (e.g., dress codes), workshops on LGBTQ+ issues, curriculum advocacy, or leadership development
  • Eligibility Requirements

    • GSA club based in a high school or local community organization in the United States
    • Club must be registered with GSA Network for the current school year (2025-2026)
    • Club must have been registered with GSA Network for the previous school year (2024-2025)
    • Project must have support from GSA club members
    • Applicant must have support from GSA Advisor to submit application (or be the Advisor)
    • GSA Advisor or school administrator must be able to participate in a Zoom interview with at least two student representatives (if selected)
    • Only one project per GSA club per application cycle

    Background

    Since September 2023, GSA Network has supported nearly 60 GSAs across 27 states with this funding. Example projects include district-wide queer proms, queer literature book clubs, queer joy video projects, and support for local organizations.

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    Step 1: Register Your GSA Club

  • Applicants must be part of an active GSA club registered with GSA Network for at least two academic school years (2024-2025 and 2025-2026)

  • If your club wasn't registered last year, it won't be eligible this year but may be considered for future opportunities
  • Step 2: Submit Your Application

  • Applications accepted through Friday, April 10 via online form

  • Submit early if possible

  • Only one project per GSA club allowed

  • If multiple applications are submitted, the first one received will be honored

  • The applicant must be listed as a contact for the registered GSA club

  • Email confirmation will be sent when application is received

  • GSA Network will review applications as they arrive and notify applicants within 2 weeks whether they are moving forward
  • Step 3: Interview (if selected)

  • If your application advances, you'll be invited to a 15-minute Zoom interview with GSA Network staff

  • At least one student representative and one adult advisor or school administrator must participate
  • Step 4: Award Notification

  • Award recipients will be notified by Friday, April 17

  • If funded, GSA Network's Director of Finance & Administration will contact you with payment instructions, including W-9 form, mailing address, and/or banking information

  • Mini-grants distribution begins Friday, May 8
  • Required Information

    • Club President, Vice President, or Adult Advisor must apply
    • Partnership with Adult Advisor or school administrator
    • Youth-led project shaped by and with club members
    • School representative approval before submission
