Wayne & Gladys Valley Foundation Grant Grantmaking Emphasis To implement the wind-down, the Foundation will make substantially larger grants that fit under the general giving areas under Areas of Interest. These grants will be intended to have a lasting, major impact upon the organizations, communities, and/or institutions that receive these grants. The Foundation intends to emphasize capital grants (bricks and mortar, facility, and equipment) as a major component of this wind-down. Future grants will incorporate the decision-making principles that have distinguished past effective grants, such as: positive impact upon as many people as possible;support of organizations that have: a track record of success; demonstrated effective practices in the past; attracted broad-based support; strong leadership; and proven to be accountable; support of organizations and programs that serve those who are worthy, having earned support through merit;ability of organizations to attract funds from other sources, including broadbased support from private sources (individuals, corporations, foundations) for a significant percentage of the funds needed.ability of organizations to be successful without continued support from the Foundation. The emphasis upon larger grants through the wind-down will be implemented through the following means: The Foundation Board and staff are identifying and researching opportunities for grantmaking;The Foundation will employ different strategies to implement future grantmaking, which may include Request for Proposals and Competitive Grants;Potential applicants will be notified when specific initiatives are determined.. Areas of Interest The Foundation will maintain its grantmaking in the three general areas as prescribed by the founders: Educational Fields Private and public colleges, universities, primary and secondary schools, early childhood education, technical and vocational schools, and other programs related to education. Catholic Organizations Other Charitable Organizations Primary focus upon medical research, health care, local parks, recreational facilities, and projects serving youth. Geographic Interest The Foundation recognizes the Valleys’ historic involvement within the East Bay Area of California (specifically Alameda and Contra Costa Counties). Therefore, the Foundation’s major considerations and primary grantmaking activities will continue to be for qualified projects serving the East Bay. There is, however, no absolute geographic limitation, except that no grants are made for organizations or projects located or primarily serving areas outside the United States.Eligibility

The Foundation seeks to make grants to organizations having: broad-based funding support, with a significant percentage of funds from other private sources; specifically defined goals and purposes; demonstrated effectiveness in its programs; expectations for continued success in its activities without future dependence on support from this Foundation; and committed, enthusiastic and diligent leadership.The Foundation’s focus generally will be on supporting existing organizations and projects which have demonstrated performance and effectiveness.The Foundation is favorably inclined to make grants that are matched with or contingent upon the receipt of funds from other sourcesIneligibility
The Foundation will not provide funding for any of the following: Individuals. Fundraising events, dinners, advertising, or similar affairs. Lobbying, propaganda, or other attempts to influence legislation or other partisan political activities. Organizations for profit and profitmaking enterprises of non-profit groups. Fraternal, labor, service clubs, or similar organizations whose principal activity is for the benefit of their own membership. Programs that directly benefit members of the Board, the staff of the Foundation, or their families. Private operating foundations. Organizations or projects outside the United States. The Foundation is not inclined to make grants for endowments or to organizations who intend to use the funds to invest for their own income purposes. The Foundation will not reply or otherwise respond to flyer or e-mail types of grant applications.
