Tuition Assistance Program

Overview: Primary mission of the Catholic Education Foundation to provide tuition assistance to Catholic elementary school families who cannot afford the full cost of education. The Foundation has committed to awarding assistance to every student applicant with demonstrated financial need for five consecutive years.

Geographic Scope: Archdiocese of Louisville, central Kentucky (40 Catholic elementary schools with 12,800 students; 9 Catholic high schools with 5,900 students)

Focus Areas: Tuition assistance for Catholic elementary and high school students, supporting access to Catholic education for low-income families

Eligibility: Catholic elementary and high school students in the Archdiocese of Louisville with demonstrated financial need

Award Amounts: Record $6.5 million distributed to 3,250 elementary students in 2019-2020 school year (averaging approximately $2,000 per student)

Program Status: Established 1999; as of that year through 2019, the Foundation has awarded over $37 million in support of Catholic education

Funding Sources: Multiple endowment funds including:

  • Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Scholarship Fund ($2,000,000 endowment reaching $100,000+ annually)

  • Don and Myrna Hinkebein Memorial Fund (The DFH Company)

  • Bill and Rosemary Hyland Memorial Fund (Hyland Insurance)

  • Saint Thomas Aquinas Fund (Passafiume family)
