Track Modeling STEAM Program

Overview: A week-long educational program created exclusively for 4th-8th graders where students conceptualize, design, and build a scale BMX track while learning engineering and design principles.

Target Grade Levels: 4th - 8th graders

Curriculum Alignment:

  • Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards

  • Uses Three-Dimensional Learning Model framework

  • Incorporates science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas

    • Program Activities:

  • Review still images and videos of BMX tracks from around the world

  • Create sketches of personal track vision

  • Meet virtually with Elite Level Pro BMX Rider to discuss concepts

  • Form teams for collaborative team-designed track

  • Formulate questions to submit to BMX track builder

  • Experiment with BMX track soil mixtures

  • Design and build a BMX track model

  • Create a BMX track logo design

  • Visit a USA BMX Sanctioned track

    • Culminating Event:

  • Students' work displayed and evaluated by community panel

  • All participants receive awards

  • Top categories receive trophies

    • Learning Outcomes:

  • Students showcase vision and creativity

  • Learn about career opportunities in engineering, architecture, construction, and sport
