Overview
Overview
_NOTE: There isn’t currently funding under the ToxScholar Outreach program, although SOT encourages members to still make visits to undergraduate institutions and has resources such as Intro to Tox PPT presentations and handouts on student opportunities in toxicology available by request for visits._
The Society of Toxicology (SOT) solicits requests for funding for toxicologists to expand the awareness of toxicology and promote toxicology careers through the interaction of toxicologists with students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about the discipline.
Presenters may select from the SOT Introduction to Toxicology slide sets and SOT can provide career brochures. A ToxScholar submits a report and writes a post for the _Communiqué_ detailing his or her experiences to help SOT track the impact of the program and to encourage others to carry out ToxScholar visits.
Background
The SOT ToxScholar Program is grounded in SOT members making presentations to undergraduate audiences at institutions offering associate and bachelor’s degrees. Many students do not have the opportunity to learn about toxicology careers or to be introduced to toxicology during their undergraduate studies.
ToxScholar visits support SOT efforts to provide undergraduates with exposure to toxicology and to recruit future toxicologists.
ToxScholars can supplement course content in undergraduate courses such as biology, chemistry, environmental science, public health, and related fields. They also can give presentations as part of a career panel, journal club, seminar series, or student club. Informal interaction with students is a positive component.
How to Arrange a Visit
The ToxScholar selects an appropriate institution and identifies a department chair or faculty member to arrange and plan the visit. Alternatively, a campus representative might request a ToxScholar visit, and SOT may assist in finding a matching SOT member who is in the area.
