TMEF Medical School Scholarships
Funder: Tennessee Medical Education Fund, Inc. (TMEF) — an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation created by the Tennessee Medical Association in 1963
Purpose: Provide need-based scholarships to medical students enrolled in accredited medical schools within Tennessee

- Eligible medical schools: - University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Vanderbilt University School of Medicine - East Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine - Meharry Medical College - LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine
Geographic Scope
- Amount: $2,000 - $10,000 per year, based on financial need
- Distribution: Funds distributed directly to the medical school in which applicant is enrolled (50% in June, 50% in December)
- Basis: Entirely need-based without regard to course of study, academic performance, or year of school
- Restrictions: Restricted for medical school expenses only
Award Details
- Must be a citizen of the United States
- Must be a legal resident of the state of Tennessee (certified by medical school)
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited medical school within Tennessee (newly accepted students for the next academic year are NOT eligible)
- Must provide documentation of financial need to pursue medicine by meeting Federal Unsubsidized William D. Ford Loan eligibility requirements
- Must be a member of the Tennessee Medical Association

- Applicants not yet enrolled in medical school are ineligible
- Non-Tennessee residents are ineligible
- Non-TMA members are ineligible

How to Apply
Application Process
1. Login to TMA Member Portal — Student applicants must log in to their member info hub portal by clicking "Apply Here" button on the TMEF Scholarships page
2. Access Application Link — Applicants will find the scholarship application link on the Home page (listed under "Click here to go to TMA's website" / before the instructional video)
3. Submit Application — Complete and submit application through the portal by the deadline
4. Schools Complete Financial Aid Information — After application closes, schools receive applicant information and complete Financial Aid documentation
5. Schools Submit Financial Aid Data — Schools submit completed Financial Aid information to TMA/TMEF via email to annika.sleenhof@tnmed.org
6. Board Review and Awards — TMEF Board of Directors meets to review and award scholarships
7. Notification — Selected students receive award letters via email
8. Distribution — Award funds distributed in two installments (June and December)
- Application form (submitted via portal)
- Documentation of financial need
- Proof of Federal Unsubsidized William D. Ford Loan eligibility
- Certification of U.S. citizenship and Tennessee residency (provided by medical school)
- Current enrollment verification in accredited Tennessee medical school

- February 20, 2026: Preliminary report to schools on applicants
- March 20, 2026: Preliminary report to schools on applicants
- April 13, 2026: Application closes
- April 15, 2026: Student applicant information sent to schools; schools complete Financial Aid information
- April 27, 2026: Completed Financial Aid information due from schools
- May 2026: TMEF BOD meets to award scholarships
- May/June 2026: Schools and selected students notified; award letters sent via email
- June 2026: First distribution (50% of award)
- December 2026: Second distribution (50% of award)
