The Van Camp Futrell Scholarship Program

Background: Established to honor Cheryl S. Futrell's four-decade career at Penick Village, advancing from Executive Housekeeper to Chief Operating Officer. Initial contributions formed a non-endowed fund upon her retirement in 2016. In 2023, resident Robert "Rip" Van Camp made a generous donation (matched by Penick) to establish an endowed scholarship fund, allowing the program to continue indefinitely.

Geographic Scope: Penick Village community (Southern Pines, North Carolina)

Focus Areas: Educational advancement for team members, their children, and grandchildren pursuing:

  • Traditional two- and four-year degrees

  • Community college programs

  • Trade schools

  • Technical programs

  • Professional licensing programs

  • Certificate programs
  • Eligibility Criteria

    Team Member Applicants (Non-Leadership):

  • Employment Status: Must be employed in good standing at Penick Village

  • Tenure: Minimum 6 months at time of application

  • Hours Worked: Minimum 520 hours in the 12 months preceding application (employment type does not matter—full-time, part-time, or PRN eligible)

  • Position: All team members eligible except Leadership team members

  • Enrollment: Must be enrolled in any credentialed educational program
  • Children/Grandchildren of Team Members:

  • Eligibility: Children and grandchildren of both Leadership and Non-Leadership team members are eligible

  • Prerequisites: Must meet the eligibility criteria above (though as dependents, hours worked requirement may be interpreted differently)

  • Enrollment: Must be enrolled in any credentialed educational program
  • Award Details

    • Full-time Students: Up to $4,000 per year
    • Part-time Students: Up to $2,000 per year
    • Workforce/Trade/Non-Traditional Programs: Comparable award based on hours of school attendance and tuition costs
