The Chair Project Artist Application

Overview: The Chair Project is an exhibition and event hosted by United Way of Midland County at the Midland Center for the Arts. Artists create artwork on provided chairs that are displayed in an exhibition and auctioned to benefit United Way of Midland County.

Geographic Scope: Midland County, Michigan

Eligibility:

  • Professional, hobbyist, and youth artists are encouraged to apply

  • Two categories: Youth (ages 14-17) and Adult

  • Prizes awarded to top 2 entries in each category
  • What They Fund:

  • Artist recognition and exhibition opportunities

  • Prizes for top artists in each category

  • Artwork displayed and auctioned
  • Artist Requirements:

  • Provide artist bio

  • Provide three examples of past artwork (max 256 MB per file, 3 files total)

  • Select top three issue areas of interest for pairing with impact stories

  • Optionally list issue areas artist does not want to be paired with

  • Agree to terms and conditions

  • Youth artists require parental permission
  • Terms & Conditions:

  • United Way and Midland Center for the Arts reserve the right to photograph accepted artwork for education, exhibition, marketing and publicity

  • Organizations reserve the right to reject entries based on content or physical gallery limitations

  • Artists must extend copyright and ownership of artwork to United Way of Midland County

  • Artwork may be auctioned to benefit United Way of Midland County (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit)

  • If selected, artists must sign detailed contract outlining additional terms

    1. Complete Online Form
    - Navigate to unitedwaymidland.org/artistapplication/
    - Enter your information

    2. Required Information
    - Full name (required)
    - Email address (required)
    - Complete mailing address including street, city, state, ZIP (required)
    - Phone number (required)
    - Artist bio (required)
    - Artist category selection: Youth (14-17) or Adult (required)

    3. Artwork Submission
    - Provide three examples of artwork you have created
    - Upload files (max 256 MB per file, 3 files total)
    - Format: Drop files or select from computer

    4. Issue Area Selection
    - Select your top three issue areas of interest
    - These will be used to pair you with impact stories aligned with your passion
    - Optionally list any sensitive issue areas you do not want to be paired with

    5. Website and Examples
    - Provide website URL if applicable
    - Include examples of past work (via the three artwork files uploaded)

    6. Terms & Conditions
    - Review and agree to The Chair Project Terms & Conditions (required)
    - Agreement confirms you understand copyright transfer to United Way
    - Youth applicants must obtain parental permission and check agreement box (required)

    7. Submit
    - Click submit to complete application

    Selection Process:

  • Top 2 artists in each category (Youth and Adult) will be selected as award winners

  • Selected artists will be contacted and required to sign detailed contract before participation
