The Care Fund

Organization: Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina

Status: Established January 2019; one-time emergency relief fund

Purpose: Support individuals facing financial hardship due to the 2019 federal government shutdown

Funding: Seed money from anonymous donor; $40,000 awarded to grantees

Target Population: Furloughed federal employees, contract workers, and their families facing:

  • Difficulty paying bills

  • Food insecurity

  • Unmet medical care needs

  • Financial strains continuing weeks to months after shutdown
  • Grantees and Awards:

  • Lowcountry Food Bank: $15,000 to supply fresh produce and food assistance boxes to 2,000+ people across Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester and Hampton counties; also provided SNAP supplement benefits

  • Origin SC (Family Services, Inc.): $25,000 to provide financial coaching and grants to 50+ households across the region; services include budget development, debt paydown, and savings building
  • Geographic Scope: Lowcountry region (Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry and Jasper counties)
