Overview

The Cancer League Research Grant

Funder: The Cancer League Inc (Oakland, CA)

Geographic Scope: Bay Area cancer programs and research only

Mission: All funds must be used in the fight against cancer in the Bay Area.

Key Requirements

  • 100% utilization: All donated funds must be used for the designated project
  • Minimal overhead: The Cancer League expects minimal administrative expenses and explicitly prohibits gift administration or grant fees

Funding Timeline

Reporting Requirements

Recipients must submit written updates at:

  • 6 months from receipt of funds

  • 12 months from receipt of funds

  • 24 months from receipt of funds
  • Recipients may be asked to present updates in person to Cancer League members for member education purposes.

    Funding Conditions

    1. Funds must support cancer-fighting programs in the Bay Area
    2. Projects must be approved by Cancer League membership
    3. If approved projects become fully funded elsewhere, Cancer League reserves right to reassign donation
    4. If approved project fails to materialize, Cancer League reserves right to reclaim funds and reassign to another approved project
    5. The Cancer League should be listed as funding source where appropriate

  • Step 1: Wait for Request for Proposals (RFP) distribution in January

  • Step 2: Prepare and submit proposal by end of February

    Project proposals must be submitted exclusively via email to allocations@cancerleagueinc.org after receipt of the Request for Proposals from the Cancer League Allocations Chairs.

    All proposals must include:

    1. Project Rationale
    - Specific value this research brings
    - What population is served by the results

    2. Prior History
    - Previous research conducted in this area
    - What this proposal will build upon (if applicable)

    3. Project Format
    - Summary description in layman's terms
    - Project goals
    - Milestones
    - Personnel needs
    - Timeline

    4. Project Budget
    - Itemized budget with specific dollar requests
    - Breakdown of costs
    - Portion of total budget being funded by requesting institution
    - Information on other grant funding being sought

    5. Project Management
    - Project administrator identification
    - Primary project contact for communications
    - Note: The Cancer League will expect timely reports/updates for the funded project

  • Large institutions should have their Foundation or Development Office submit proposals

  • The Cancer League typically has funds available during the first quarter and disperses funds during the second quarter of the calendar year
