Overview

Teen Action Lab

Overview: The Obama Foundation and After School Matters partner to bring hands-on youth programs to the Obama Presidential Center. The Teen Action Lab creates opportunities for Chicago teens to build skills, explore interests, and grow as leaders through athletics, wellness, and beyond.

Geographic Scope: Chicago's South Side, specifically communities of South Shore, Woodlawn, and Washington Park.

Target Audience: Chicago high school teens ages 14-18 who live and/or attend school in Washington Park, Woodlawn, and South Shore communities.

Location: Home Court at the Obama Presidential Center

  • Partner Organization: After School Matters serves as the signature youth programming partner, providing high-quality paid out-of-school-time opportunities.

    Program Launch: Summer 2026 (programs begin July 2026)

    Current Programs (Summer 2026 Pilot):
    1. Basketball, Health & Wellness
    - Co-ed high-energy basketball and wellness program
    - Develop essential basketball skills
    - Strengthen teamwork and leadership through group challenges
    - Mindful movement included
    - Ages 14-18

    2. Volleyball, Health & Wellness
    - Develop essential volleyball techniques (serving, passing, setting, hitting)
    - Supportive and motivating environment
    - Growth as player, athlete, and teammate
    - Ages 14-18

    Compensation: Teens earn a stipend for participating and completing the program.

    Program Philosophy: Based on shared belief that when young people have access to meaningful opportunities, supportive mentors, and spaces to belong, they can shape their futures and communities.

    Alignment: Sports used as powerful gateway for young people — creating connection, building confidence, opening doors to mentorship, leadership, and opportunities extending beyond the court or field.

    Future Expansion: Partnership expected to grow over time to include hands-on programs across culinary arts and creative disciplines, with additional organizations including My Brother's Keeper Alliance, Girls Opportunity Alliance, Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, Laureus USA, and other community partners.

    Design Purpose: Built to develop everyday confidence and lifetime leadership skills.

    Application Process

    Application Method: Submit Program Interest Form online

    Steps:
    1. Submit Program Interest Form for either Basketball, Health & Wellness or Volleyball, Health & Wellness Program (or both)
    2. Attend interview & enrollment event
    - Event dates: April 28, 2026 or May 11, 2026
    3. If selected, participate in program beginning July 2026

    Eligibility Requirements:

  • Chicago high school student

  • Ages 14-18

  • Reside in and/or attend school in South Shore, Woodlawn, or Washington Park communities

  • Able to commit to full program participation
  • Important Notes:

  • Space is limited

  • Participation begins July 2026

  • Programs are co-ed

  • Full participation required to earn stipend
