Sum Primus Program
Overview: "Sum Primus" is Latin for "I am First." A comprehensive support network for first-generation college students, providing mentoring and community building.
Eligibility:
Program Components:
- Duration: One-week intensive program in August (August 24–28)
- Features: - Early move-in to campus - Campus tours and orientation - Team activities, games, and group meals - Tips for academic and personal success - Local shopping trips with provided transportation - Field trips around Southern Maryland - Connections with faculty, staff, and leaders (many first-gen themselves)
Sum Primus Summer First Program
- Inclusive living environment for first-generation college students
- Goal: Stimulate academic success through targeted support
- Environment: Encouraging community fostering personal development and success
Sum Primus Living Learning Community (SPLLC)
- Reconnection event for first-generation students and parents
- Meet with President Jordan
- Network with first-generation faculty and staff
- Learn success positioning strategies
- Plan summer and break engagement
- Prepare for life after college
Second Semester Meet-Up
- Special orientation exclusively for first-generation parents
- Support community for first-generation parents, faculty, and staff
New Parent Orientation
Impact: Over 20% of SMCM students are first-generation college students
