The Stubblefield Foundation Grants Program, managed by the Blue Mountain Community Foundation, supports 501(c)(3) public charities and nonprofits to address community needs in Walla Walla and surrounding areas. It honors the legacy of Joseph and Anna Stubblefield, who dedicated their estate to aid vulnerable populations. With a focus on urgent funding requests, the program emphasizes community engagement and strives to foster a thriving, connected region through charitable initiatives and ongoing support.Overview
Who We Are Blue Mountain Community Foundation (BMCF) started in 1984 based on the idea that the area needed a place for donors who cared about the community to make long-term charitable investments. Joining the community foundation movement, which began over 100 years ago, BMCF became one of over 750 community foundations in the United States. Community foundations are generally tied to a specific geographic area or community, and seek major gifts that are invested for the long-term, to benefit our community in perpetuity. A group of 36 local leaders and citizens, under the guidance of Pete Peery and John Reese, met and resolved to form a community foundation. Too many endowment gifts from people who cared deeply about their communities were lost to local control for lack of a community foundation. Since 1984, BMCF has received and grown assets to exceed $115 million in more than 440 charitable funds which benefit the entire community! Mission Be the catalyst that transforms the Blue Mountain region by growing generosity and connecting people, charitable causes, and community needs. Vision Our vision is a more thriving, engaged, and caring Blue Mountain community. Stubblefield Foundation Grants Program The foundation’s beginnings date back to Joseph and Anna Stubblefield—Walla Walla pioneers who dedicated their lives, and ultimately their estate, to support “father or motherless children, indigent women and elderly indigent widows.” In 1904, upon the death of Joseph, the Trust created the Stubblefield Home, which served for decades as a safe and nurturing haven for orphaned children while also providing direct support to widows in need. Over time, as community needs evolved, the Trust broadened its mission to support a wide variety of charitable initiatives across the region, helping generations of individuals and families benefit from the Stubblefields’ legacy of compassion and service. The mansion, located on what is now Home Street in Walla Walla, WA, was surrounded by 40 acres of farmland. The Stubblefield Foundation distributes the bulk of its annual grants through participates in the BMCF’s annual Community Grants Program, which accepts applications each August and distributes awards in November. Specifically, the Stubblefield Foundation will review all grant applications made through BMCF’s Community Grants Program and award the majority of its annual grants in response to those applications. This means that a nonprofit seeking a grant from Stubblefield Foundation for annual program or operating support or an upcoming campaign, should apply through the BMCF Community Grants Program, not through a separate Stubblefield Foundation grant program. Recognizing that many organizations face evolving or unforeseen needs, the Foundation offers year-round support through the Stubblefield Foundation Grant Program. This ongoing program allows nonprofits to request funding for unexpected or urgent needs at any time via BMCF’s online grant portal.Eligibility
