Steve Tilford Memorial Grant

Overview: Honors legacy of Steve Tilford, legendary bike racer and advocate for clean sport. Supports Junior development clubs/teams that excel in fostering young cyclists while emphasizing sports integrity and clean performances. Two-year grant cycle.

Award Details:

  • Four (4) Junior clubs selected

  • Up to $1,500 per recipient

  • Two-year cycle

    • Eligibility - Club/Team Requirements:

  • Prospective or current USA Cycling Club/Team members

  • Operate USA Cycling club, team, or program with specific purpose of developing Junior-level athletes

  • Successful operational history of at least two years

  • Support complete athlete pathway: Junior and development-level programs progressing toward U23 and elite-level programs

  • Serve licensed Junior athletes (racing age 11-18)

  • Have current USA Cycling registered coach on membership and/or staff roster

  • Hold at least Bronze-level recognition with Safe Sport Club Recognition Program (renewed for 2025)

  • Licensed club or team in good standing with USA Cycling

  • Tax-exempt, registered non-profit organization

    • Selection Criteria:

  • Excellence in development of young cyclists

  • Emphasis on sports integrity

  • Promotion of clean and healthy performances

  • Quantified results demonstrating success

  • Applications Open: Monday, August 4, 2027

  • Applications Close: Friday, August 22, 2027

  • Grant Recipients Announced: Friday, September 5, 2027

    • Review Process:

  • Panel members review and grade independently

  • Median score (from all panel members) = final score

  • Tie-breakers determined by score of select questions

    • About Steve Tilford:
    Legendary bike racer (professional 1986+), four-time USA Cycling Cyclocross National Champion, represented USA three times at UCI World Road Championships, seven-time UCI Masters World Champion (5x Mountain Bike, 2x Cyclocross), inducted Mountain Bike Hall of Fame (2000) and U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame (2023). Outspoken advocate for clean and equitable competition, opposed doping and believed it undermined sport integrity.
