Target Range Grants

The Target Range Grant Program, offered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, aims to enhance public shooting facilities aligned with hunter education and shooting sports. This initiative not only promotes responsible firearm use but also supports regional development through partnerships and recreational opportunities. Eligible applicants include nonprofits and local agencies, with grants covering up to 90% of project costs. A minimum request of $150,000 is required, ensuring significant investment in community-focused shooting practices.

Purpose
The Target Range Grant Program supports the development of public, safe, accessible shooting facilities that align with TPWD hunter education and shooting sports activities and programs. Benefits of participation include partnership opportunities within the target range community, recreational opportunities for shooting sports, and regional locations for hunters to practice their skills.
Provisions
The program provides opportunities for construction, development and improvement of firearm and archery range facilities. The goal of the program is to teach hunter education and shooting sports students to be responsible and conservation-minded, to provide instruction in safe firearm operations, to instill ethics, and to add awareness and understanding of relevant hunting and gun laws.
Grant Funding
Awardees take on the costs to develop, construct and submit eligible receipts for reimbursement. A maximum of 90% of eligible costs incurred on the project are admissible for reimbursement.
Applicants must match at least 10% of total project costs through documented cash expenditures, donated materials and labor or other pre-approved in-kind activities. Matches based on federal funding sources are not eligible. Minimum request: $150,000. Requests are subject to availability of funding.

Eligibility

Nonprofit organizations, individuals and groups such as commercial target range operators, shooting clubs and local governmental agencies that provide public target range access and offer hunter education classes. Eligible persons or entities applying for target range funding must sign a term contract (Target Range Agreement, TRA) with the department if approved.
