Shyaam Bachman Memorial Scholarship Fund Grant

The Shyaam Bachman Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, honors a dedicated science teacher and supports Black/African American males from the Greater Hartford area. This fund assists students with financial need who are graduating high school and planning to pursue a degree in a science-related field. With a history of awarding nearly $30 million in scholarships since 1945, the foundation continues to empower local students in their educational journeys.

About the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving
Over the years, individuals and families have donated money to the Foundation, creating an endowment. From the endowment, the Foundation makes grants to a broad range of nonprofit organizations in the region.

The Hartford Foundation Scholarship Program helps award hundreds of scholarships each year to local students seeking post-secondary higher education.
This fund was created in memory of Shyaam Bachman, an honors student at Farmington High, a gifted scholar athlete, a four-year presidential scholar at Hampton University, and later, a dedicated science teacher who touched the lives of many students. This memorial scholarship fund will support Black/African American males with financial need who have graduated from a high school in the Greater Hartford region and are planning to major in a science-related field.

Eligibility

Selection CriteriaGraduating seniors of Farmington High School or any high school in the 29 town Greater Hartford region.
Are Black/African American males.
Planning on majoring in a science-related field.
Entering a 2-year or 4-year college or university.
Have achieved a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Have financial need.
