Summary
The SFS Graduate Student Conservation Research Award supports outstanding graduate research proposals focused on endangered species, biodiversity, and conservation planning. With up to $1,000 in funding, the award encourages innovative solutions for the conservation of freshwater ecosystems. Eligible applicants include graduate students who have not previously received this award. This initiative aims to enhance scientific understanding and contribute to the restoration of critical aquatic habitats, fostering the next generation of conservation leaders.Overview
Mission The Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) is an international scientific organization whose purpose is to promote further understanding of freshwater ecosystems (rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries) and ecosystems at the interface between aquatic and terrestrial habitats (wetlands, bogs, fens, riparian forests, and grasslands). The society fosters the exchange of scientific information among the membership, and with other professional societies, resource managers, policymakers, educators, and the public. Society members study genetics to community structure of freshwater organisms, freshwater ecosystem function, physical processes that affect freshwaters, and linkages between freshwater ecosystems and surrounding landscapes. Applied aspects of their science include habitat and water quality assessment, conservation, fisheries and invasive species management, integrated water resource management, and restoration. Graduate Student Conservation Research Award The annual Graduate Student Conservation Research Award (GSCRA) provides support to the graduate student that submits the best proposal addressing endangered or threatened species or ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation planning, or supporting or implementing conservation or restoration of an endangered species or ecosystem. Criteria The GSCRA consists of one or more awards totaling $1,000 supporting the best graduate student research proposal(s) addressing at least one of the following criteria: advancing knowledge of the biology or ecology of an endangered or threatened species or ecosystem;advancing knowledge of conservation of biodiversity at any or all levels of organization (from genes to ecosystems);developing a plan to conserve an aquatic species or ecosystem;supporting or implementing the conservation or restoration of an impaired or threatened species or ecosystem. The budget must contain sufficient detail and explanation of how the award will be used. The following items are typically supported: Living expenses in the field or at a research station; travel to study sites (if via automobile, an allowance of $0.55 (U.S.)/mile may be used to estimate costs); consumable supplies or expendable equipment.Eligibility
