Overview

Science of Conservation Marine Scholarship Program

Overview: A partnership-based scholarship program designed to assist students furthering their marine science education at world-class marine research facilities.

Background: Founded in 2018 through a partnership between Shimano and the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA). The program emphasizes joint efforts to improve understanding of the marine environment and enhance the role that recreational anglers can play as stewards of shared marine resources.

Geographic Scope: United States, with initial focus on Gulf of Mexico region and expanding to other regions.

Eligible Institutions:

  • Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (primary location)

  • Marine science centers in other regions (as program expands)
  • Focus Areas: Marine science education with emphasis on:

  • Fisheries science and conservation

  • Estuarine water quality and ecosystem processes

  • Aquaculture and mariculture

  • Fish and benthic community assessment

  • Migratory patterns and artificial reef habitat use of fisheries species
  • Award Structure:

  • Initial year (2018): 4 scholarships

  • Program expanded with additional partners (BP and CCA Music City Chapter) to offer scholarships at multiple marine science centers
  • Partners: Shimano, BP, CCA Music City Chapter, Harte Research Institute

    Program Goals: To invest in the next generation of marine scientists and prepare them to be leaders in marine resource management and conservation.
